| Component Weights by Damon Rinard |
- Kwan Low has started a weight-weenies' mailing list, GramHead at http://www.topica.com/lists/gramhead/
- I weighed nearly all these components myself over the years, at first on a small electronic gram scale and later on a small triple beam balance.
- You can find URLs for many of these companies on my links page at links.htm
Tip: within each table, components are listed in order by weight, not brand. If you are looking for a particular brand, please use the "Edit/Find (on this page)...Ctrl+F" search feature of your browser.

One link is 1/2 inch long, and the weight listed under "1 LINK" is the average of all the links weighed, including both inner and outer links.
Use the weight given under "108 LINKS" for comparison. Strangely enough, nearly every road and mountain bike takes a chain of this length!

The crank weight data doesn't lend itself to clear presentation using just a few columns, so if you have a monitor as small as mine, please be willing to scroll sideways if you want to see all the text.
I collected data in so many columns because there really isn't one number by which to compare crank weights. Getting the lightest combination may mean using one kind of crank on the right, and another one on the left. Then, too, there's always the weight of the chain rings. For example, the SR Raleigh crank is quite light when weighed without chain rings, but the thick rings make the total weight high.
It's also interesting to see so many "old" cranks listed among the lightest. To be sure, topping the list are a few modern exotics, but after Topline and Magic Motorcycle, the list consists mostly of old SR, Campy Nuovo/Super Record and old Mavic stuff. Of course, that may just be a reflection of which cranks I've had the opportunity to weigh!
Column headings are explained here:
TOT WT. is the weight, in grams, of two arms, all chain rings (whether two or three) and all chain ring bolts. This weight includes the weight of one-key-releases only if they come stock with the crank.
CRANK LENGTH is given in millimeters.
TEETH, Sm Lg are number of teeth on the small and large chain rings, if present.
ARM WEIGHTS, L R Both are the weights in grams of the left arm, right arm, and both arms respectively.
RH w/ RINGS is the weight of just the right arm, with all chain rings and bolts.
COMMENTS are my notes.

A standard 1 inch steel steerer weighs 0.89 grams per millimeter.
MAKE & MODEL is the make and model of the fork I weighed.
LENGTH is the length of the steerer tube in millimeters.
ACTUAL is the weight of the fork.
NORMALIZED is the weight adjusted to a 175 mm steerer tube. Use this weight for comparisons. For forks with a steel steerer tube, I calculated normalized weights from the actual weights by adding or subtracting 0.89 grams per millimeter difference in steerer tube length.

I listed these hubs strictly by weight. That's because the number of cogs that will fit on a freewheel hub is much more arbitrary than the number that will fit on a cassette hub. You can almost always fit a seven speed freewheel on a six speed hub, and only occasionally find you have to add an axle washer to get frame clearance between the chain and seat stay when in the small cog. Eight is usually too extreme, both in dish and axle stress. Only the Sachs is actually designed for an eight speed freewheel.

I weighed nearly all these rims myself over the years, at first on a small electronic gram scale and later on a small triple beam balance. It is interesting to see how the weights vary between multiple samples of the same model rim. I've even listed an unusual blast from the past: a pair of Super Champion Mixte rims. They accept either tubular or clincher tires!
Tip: These rims are listed in order by weight, not brand. If you are looking for a particular brand, please use the "Edit/Find (on this page)...Ctrl+F" search feature of your browser.

I weighed nearly all these spokes and nipples myself. I gathered as many spokes (or nipples) of the same kind as I had available, weighed the batch, then divided by the number of spokes (or nipples) in the batch to find the weight per spoke (or nipple).
I've listed spoke weights first, then nipple weights.
I use spoke diameter rather than gauge, because diameter is easily measured, and the gauge equivalence falls apart at some diameters. But since most spokes are sold by gauge, not diameter, I've listed the common equivalents below.
14 gauge is 2.0 mm diameterSheldon Brown also has a gauge conversion table in his glossary of bicycle terms.
15 gauge is 1.8 mm diameter
16 gauge is 1.6 mm diameter
