This clever gadget allows you to mix different brands of shifter /derailers, different numbers of speeds, and still maintain perfect indexing!
The ShiftMate is a shifting interface device for mating different bicycle shifting components and wheel. Through the use of a ratio changing pulley, the ShiftMate adapts different component brands and models and makes the proper correction in the amount of cable pull needed for perfect shifting.ShiftMate features and benefits:
- CNC machined
- Sealed ball bearing
- Hard Nickel plating
- Reduces cable friction and cable housing length
- Wide range of component mates & interfacing
- Small compact design only 12 grams

- Q: How does ShiftMate performance compare to aftermarket cassettes with modified spacing?
- A: It depends on the quality of the cassette. Some after market cassette manufactures cheat by modifying factory cassettes and making the spacing between the sprockets unequal to get the overall proper cassette width. In this case shifting quality suffers. The ShiftMate will allow you to use factory cassettes for optimal performance. The Shiftmate is also about half the cost of many aftermarket cassettes.
- Q: Does the ShiftMate easily become contaminated with dirt?
- A: No! Because the cable wraps around the pulley, most of the cable groove remains covered by the cable. This has the effect of keeping debris out of the cable slot. Also, because the Shiftmate is mounted to the outside of the tire path and at the rear of the derailer, it tends to collect very little dirt in this location of the bike.
- Q: How do I tell if my Campagnolo shifter is pre or post 2001?
- A: The rubber hood on the older models has a pointy top, the newer models have a rounded top.
- Q: How do I tell if my Campagnolo derailer is pre or post 2001?
- A: Before 2001, Campagnolo derailers had the spring tension adjuster on the upper ("B") pivot, as Shimano and most other brands do.
After 2001, they relocated the spring adjuster to the lower ("A") pivot.
The difference in indexing between pre- and post-2001 Campagnolo shifters/derailers is very small and subtle. In practice they are generally interchangeable.
- Q: What about Shimano Dura-Ace?
- A: Dura-Ace had interchangeability issues up through the end of Dura-Ace 8-speed in 1996. In 1997, when Dura-Ace went to 9-speed, it was harmonized with the rest of Shimano's systems, so there is no interchangeability issue with newer Dura-Ace derailers or shifters. This site contains a major article on Dura-Ace interchangeability.
