Note: The status of the Romulus and Redwood models is a bit unclear at the moment. They have pretty much been supplanted by the new Rambouillet.
We do not currently have any Romuli or Redwoods in stock, and it is not certain that there will be any more produced. See the Rambouillet, instead! We're leaving the Romulus information on line for the time being for informational purposes only.
The Romulus and Redwood are the first complete bicycles to be offered by Grant Petersen's Rivendell Bicycles. They are also the most affordable ever! The base price of the Romulus and Redwood is $1550, which gets you an almost complete bicyle. What's missing are the most commonly substituted parts: the saddle, pedals and handlebar tape.
The test-ride bike shown here is equipped with a Brooks B.17 saddle, Shimano PD323 2-way pedals and Cinelli cork tape. As shown, the price would be $1665.00.
The two models, Romulus and Redwood are fundamentally the same, except that the Redwood comes in super-tall sizes only, and is built with beefier tubing to suit the larger rider.
Both the Romulus and Redwood feature a unique component mix:
- Shimano 105 hubs, derailers and headset.
- Shimano Dura-Ace 9-speed bar-end shifters.
- Shimano R-400 brake levers and 57 mm A-550 long-reach calipers.
- Sugino XD triple crankset 48-36-26.
- 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25 cassette.
- Nitto Noodle Bar, Technomic Deluxe stem and seatpost.
- Araya RC-540 rims with Panasonic/Rivendell Ruffy-Tuffy tires.
- 2 mm stainless steel spokes, 32 front, 36 rear.
